The Nikon Z 70-200mm f2.8 VR S produces pretty sharp results in the inner image circle at 70mm focal length even wide open. But to get the outer areas sharp the lens needs to be stopped down to at least f11. This lens is unapologetically a Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 professional lens. It carries a high price tag. If build quality alone set the price, it certainly would be worth it. The control rings are smooth to turn with just the right amount of resistance. Nikon Z 6II + Z 70-200 f/2.8S lens ISO 320, 1/200, +1.67 EV dialed in, f/2.8. 200mm.
The Nikon Z 70-180mm f/2.8 proves that relatively fast f/2.8 constant-aperture telephoto zooms don’t have to be big and heavy. Indeed, while most ‘trinity’ wide-angle, standard and telephoto zooms are typically hefty affairs, Nikon’s Z 17-28mm f/2.8, Z 28-75mm f/2.8 and this new Z 70-180mm lens are relatively compact and lightweight.
For a 70-200 f2.8, size and weight is a low weightage category. We are talking professional and long term use case scenario. From high to low priority: versatility (stills, video, extenders), weather sealing, autofocus, sharpness, customizability, loca, bokeh (since it is subjective), size and weight balance. So my take: 1. Nikon 70-200 f2.8 2.
However, the new Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII does have an edge in almost every respect. (Except looks; the original 70-200 2.8 is much more sexy looking!) It is noticeably sharper, so if you shoot high-end portraits and you need to make huge prints from a 36 megapixel D800, while shooting at f/2.8 all day long, then the mk2 is well worth it.
