But a V8 would probably fit in the Flex and Explorer if Ford wanted to make that happen. In the 2017 F-150, the V8 generates 385 horsepower, just 10 more than the 3.5 EcoBoost, and costs $1,100 less.
EcoBoost Technology. Introduced for the 2011 model year, the EcoBoost family of engines comes in a variety of four- and six-cylinder sizes (and even three-cylinder) and is available on everything from the compact Focus to the workhorse F-150. Popular sizes include the 3.5L V6, 2.3L V6, 2.7L V6, and 1.6L I4.
I was eager to test out this Explorer’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. What I experienced was exactly how I hoped it would be. With 365hp and 475Nm under the hood, the Explorer accelerates with the urgency of a vehicle half its size. It’s smooth from the get-go, then the twin turbos kick in and leave smaller cars in the dust. Job well done, Ford.

Larger than its I4 counterpart, the 3.0L EcoBoost V6 engine boasts the highest performance metrics on the 2023 Ford Explorer with 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. Due to its size, it can tow 300 pounds more than the I4 for a maximum amount of 5,600 pounds. Like the I4, it’s paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission.
The F150 2.7L ecoboost specifies 5w-30 to Ford spec WSS-M2C946-B1. Quote. Recommended motor oil (U.S.): WSS-M2C946-B1 Motorcraft® SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP. I'm seeing mostly synthetic aftermarket oils that meet this spec and haven't noticed it on conventional such as Pennzoil or QSAD.
